Solar Eclipse of May 20, 2012

Solar eclipse as the sun sets in Austin, Texas on May 20, 2012

Here’s a photo of the sun setting today as it was being eclipsed by the moon.  I think this is the last eclipse we’ll see in North America until October of 2014.  Wikipedia has a write-up here.

I Just Want a Dumb TV – Gizmodo

Posted in Uncategorized on May 23rd, 2011 by paul – Be the first to comment

I’m in the market for a pretty large television, like 55 or 60 inches.  I’ve been reading up on widgets and netflix-enabled TVs and stuff and it all makes me feel a bit uneasy. You see, I’ve always been the guy that buys all his stereo pieces separately, and I’m starting to feel the same way about televisions.

So, does anybody have any opinions about good dumb TVs?  I just want a great picture.  I don’t need speakers, or widgets, or networks, etc.

Here’s an article that expresses my feelings exactly: I Just Want a Dumb TV – Gizmodo.

We used to all have desktops.  I held on to that tradition longer than most.  I’ve since moved on to a laptop, but I’m thinking that a tablet would be great for most stuff.  I still need something a little more powerful for processing photos, but for the standard couch-surfing, I’m sorely tempted to buy and hack a NOOK Color.

BTW, this was mostly a test post, so no need to nitpick it.  :-)

My New Home

I’ve been looking for a domain name that is less cutesy and easier to spell than “tifster” and this is the best I can come up with in the face of the ridiculous squatters.  I came close to getting “bypaul.com” but, even though it is 100% unused, I would have to wait for October to see if whoever has it, shows up to pay the bill.

The plan is for this site to become the website behind “Paul Chamberlain Photography” which is just way too long.  It might also house other non-personal stuff, such as me ranting about something technical, sharing some open source development, or whatever.

If you’re with me now, you’ll get to see it take shape.  Enjoy
